Abstract:This volume is a product of an international colloquium on the teaching of African history and culture to the diaspora and the teaching of diaspora history and culture to Africa, held in Brasilia in November 2009. The colloquium noted the importance of the teaching of African history to erasing the prevailing Eurocentric worldviews and to developing own knowledge systems. The book contains twenty-two chapters dealing with such issues as culture and rites in African indigenous societies, Africannness, closing the cultural divide between continental and diaspora Africans, the training of teachers in the history of Africa, representations of Africans in theatrical works, area studies in African and diaspora history, the creation of slave history in the film 'Sankofa' (Haile Gerima, 1993), African-based music education, oral traditions in teaching African history, and global African identity.
