Abstract
The study collected and transcribed the oríkì of selected Tìmì of Ẹdẹ. Also, it identified and discussed the various thematic contents and the distinguishing features in the oríkì of the selected Tìmì. Further, it appraised the stylistic features of the poems. This was with a view to advancing the understanding of features that distinguish and connect different Tìmì of Ẹdẹ. The study employed primary and secondary sources of data. The primary source included oral interviews with the incumbent Tìmì, selected chiefs, palace drummers, chanters and purposively selected traditional historians in Ẹdẹ. The secondary source included books, journal articles and the Internet. Data collected were transcribed and analysed using hermeneutical and sociological theories. The study found that various thematic contents were represented in the oríkì of selected Tìmì. The thematic contents included the attributes of each of the selected kings, the place, space and power accorded to the kings among the people of Ẹdẹ and its environs. It also discovered that the oríkì of each Tìmì preserves the attributes of the selected Tìmì through time. It also showed that simile, metaphor and repetition were frequently used in the identified oríkì. The study concluded that the contents and forms of the oríkì of selected kings are embodiments of history. The study further established that oríkì is a chronicle of interrelations of kings and their subjects in Ẹdẹ. The study also broadened the understanding of the perception of the kings by the Yorùbá, as contained in their oríkì.
