Book chapter

Grief and bereavement are characteristic human responses to loss. The mourner grieves because he can no longer deny the reality of death. Mourning refers to the conventional behaviour as determined by the mores and customs of the society. Mourning as a ritual may contains little or no affect. Grief may occur outside the mourning procedure. This means that grief and mourning may occur independently of each other, but they are generally closely related and complement each other.
