The accurate measurement and verification of the authenticity of crop varieties are critical and central as key evidence of their adoption. This report presents the adoption rate of improved maize varieties growing on farmers' fields in six States (Benue, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Nasarawa and Niger) of Nigeria, as one of the main components of the Nigeria Country Plan Baseline and Varietal Monitoring (NIBAS) Project, using two approaches: (i) a traditional survey approach in which information about improved maize varieties was directly elicited from farmers, and (ii) a DNA-fingerprinting approach which helps to accurately measure, verify and identify maize varieties grown by farmers. The report therefore documents the process of DNA fingerprinting, including genotype collection in farmers' fields for the identification of varieties, estimation of adoption rates, and characterization of the most widely adopted improved varieties in terms of area coverage, geographical distribution and age. The analysis was based on maize leaf samples collected from 1868 plots coming from 1705 maize growing farmers.en_US
