- ItemOpen AccessPerceived parental control, peer influence and criminal behaviour among students-inmates in correctional centres in Osun State(Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling, Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria., 2021) AJAYI Taiwo MichaelThe study identified the types and levels of criminal behaviour observable among students – inmates’ \in OsunState, it also determined the level of parental control and peer influence experienced by the students. In addition, it investigated the ability of parental control and peer influence to individually and jointly explain criminal behaviour among the students; finally, it determined the extent to which demographic variables explained criminal behaviour among the students under study. These were with a view to providing information on the factors that could predispose secondary school students to criminal behavior. The study adopted survey research design. The population of the study comprised, one thousand, one hundred and sixty-five (1,165)inmates inthe two Correctional Centers and three hundred and twenty two (322) Suspects persons detained in police custody in Osun State. A sample size of two hundred (200) detained Students was used for the study. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire titled “Questionnaire on Criminal Behaviour among students in Osun State. Data collected were analysed using frequency counts, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Step-wise Multiple Regression was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that the behaviour commonly exhibited as reported by the respondents was Theft with the highest RSI value of 0.382 and closely followed by Burglary with RSI value of 0.324 and Forgery with RSI value of 0.312, the least popular criminal behaviour among the respondent was Rape with RSI value of 0.228. The result of most commonly used abused drugs by students in Osun State as reported by the students was Marijuana with the highest RSI value of 0.374 and closely followed by Codeine with RSI value of 0.331 and Skunk with RSI value of 0.314. The least popular out-lawed drug reportedly consumed by the respondents was crack/heroine with the least RSI value of 0.242. It was also revealed in this study that most of the respondents (92%) were found to exhibit high level of criminal behaviour, while only 7% exhibited moderate level and just 1% exhibited low level of criminal behaviour. Results on Parental Control revealed that 77.5% of the respondents experienced high level of parental control, whereas only 1% of the respondents indicated that they experienced low level of parental control. Similarly, the results on Peer Influence revealed that 29.5% of the respondents experienced moderate level of peer influence while57% claimed to have experienced high level of peer influence, only 13% of the respondents experienced low level of Peer Influence whereas 0.05% indicated that they experienced very low level of Peer Influence. It was concluded in this study that more than half (that is large number) of students who were involved in criminal behaviour do so as a result of substantiate peer influence and love for money despite the high level parental control they claimed to have received.
