The development of high-level manpower at the University of Ife, Ile-Ife. 1962-1982
(Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Nigeria, 1986) Akinbowale, Adelarin Rosaline
This study examines the development of high-level man-power carried out at the University of Ife, Ile-Ife during the first two decades of its existence. Primary sources such as interviews, reports and statistical data obtained from the library and government institutions were collated and analysed to critically examine the various ways in which the University of Ife contributed to the development of manpower to meet national needs. Findings from the study show that initially the University produced manpower in the Faculties of Arts, Law, Social Sciences, Science and Agriculture. However, courses in pre-clinical medicine and engineering could not take off in the first quinquennium as earlier scheduled due to some reasons which included lack of funds and the misfortune of politics which beset the University shortly after its establishment. Later however, the Faculties of Education, Pharmacy, Technology, Health Sciences and Environmental Design, Planning and. Management were established to produce competent graduate teachers, pharmacists, engineers, doctors, architects and surveyors to meet Nigeria's needs. Findings further show that the number of other graduates produced was found to be considerable when compared with the total output by all Nigerian universities. It is recommended that further research should be carried out to evaluate the contributions of other universities to produce high-level manpower in Nigeria as well. The universities and manpower planners should co-ordinate efforts to identify areas of manpower needs which the universities will be requested to meet.
