Influence of self -esteem,media exposure and peer pressure on body image among adolescent in Ondo State
    (Psychology,Obafemi Awolowo University, 2016) Kayode, Gbolahan O
This study examined the influence of self-esteem on body image among adolescents in the study area; examine the influence of peers on body image among adolescents in the study area; assess the gender difference of body image among adolescents; assess the media influence on body image among adolescents; and determine the joint influence of self-esteem, peer influence and media exposure on body image among adolescents in Ondo State, Nigeria. The aim of this was to provide relevant information for stakeholders in understanding body image in adolescents. This study adopted a survey research design. Primary data were used for the study. The data were collected among 600 secondary school adolescents from the three senatorial districts in Ondo State. Two Local Government Areas were chosen randomly in each senatorial district and from each Local Government a school was purposively selected making a total of six schools. One hundred participants were purposively sampled in each secondary school from which an equal number of male and female were sampled and 600 hundred participants were sampled. Four standardized psychological scales were used for data collection. These are: Body-esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA) to measure Body Image, Rosenberg’s Self-esteem Scale (RSE) to measure Self Esteem, Peer Influence Scale (PIS) to measure Peer Influence and Media Exposure Scale (MES) to measure Media Exposure. The data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Independent sample t-test. The results of the study revealed that self-esteem did not have significant influence on body image of adolescents [F (1, 592) = 0.20, p>.05]. It also showed that media exposure had a significant influence on body image of adolescents [F (1, 592) = 10.21, p<.05], it showed further that peer pressure had a significant influence on body image [F (1, 592 = 13.79, p<.05]. The result showed that female adolescents had better body image than male adolescents because the means score of male (M=53.87, SD=4.94) is higher than the means score of female (M=42.82, SD=3.09) (the lower the score the better the body image and vice versa). The joint influence of the variables were also significant on body image of adolescents [F (1, 592) = 1.513, p<.05]. The study concluded that peer pressure and media exposure had significant influence on body image but self-esteem did not, however, these factors acted in unison to influence body image.
