Abstract
This study examined the design criteria for central teaching facilities for the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. A literature search provided information on the current criteria generally used in the design of Lecture theatres and four case studies of existing Lecture theatres provided information on the problems of theatres-in-use in University settings.
It was established that the location of a central teaching facility is guided by consideration for convenience of users, the current land use planning of the University Campus and the physical qualities of available land.
The allocation of space is guided by the unexpected number of users and the expected frequency of use of the facility, while the design of the physical facility, the lecture theatres, is guided by consideration for sight lines of users, acoustic properties of the theatre and convenience of users. Based on these criteria a design was proposed
