Abstract
in Oyo state. It further determined the individual and combined influence of value congruence and emotional labour on workplace deviance among secondary school teachers in Oyo state. It also The study investigated the types and levels of workplace deviance among secondary school teachers determined the role of religiousity and peer influence on workplace deviance among secondary school teachers in Oyo state. These were with a view to providing information on the influence of value congruence and emotional labour on workplace deviance as well as to determine the role of religiousity and peer influence on workplace deviance among secondary school teachers in Oyo state. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for the study comprised all secondary school teachers in both public and private schools in Oyo State. The sample for the study comprised 500 secondary school teachers selected using multistage sampling technique. Two senatorial districts were selected from the three senatorial districts in the state using simple random sampling technique. From the selected senatorial districts, four local government areas were selected each using simple random sampling technique. From each of the four local government areas, five public and private schools were selected each using stratified random sampling with school ownership as stratum. Five teachers were selected from each school using simple random sampling technique. An instrument titled “Questionnaire on Value Congruence, Emotional Labour and Workplace Deviance” was used to elicit information from the respondents. Each of the sections in the questionnaire measured each of the variables. The data collected were analysed using Mean, Standard Deviation, percentages, K-means Cluster, ANOVA, Linear and Multiple Regression. The results showed that 61.2% of teachers demonstrated moderate level of workplace deviance, 30.6 % demonstrated a low level of workplace deviance while 8.2% showed a high level of workplace deviance. The results also showed that 91.0% of teachers demonstrated interpersonal deviance while a few 9.0% showed organizational deviance. The result further showed that value congruence (R2 = 0.019) and emotional labour (R2 = 0.017) influenced workplace deviance individually. The result also showed that value congruence and emotional labour when combined influenced workplace deviance (R2 = 0.046). However, value congruence was negatively influential (B = -0.154, p < 0.05). while emotional labour was positively influential (B = 0.173, p<0.05). Finally, the result showed that religiousity (F = 0.218, p > 0.05) and peer influence (F= 0.046, p > 0.05) do not play any significant role in workplace deviance. The study further showed that religiousity and peer influence when combined (F = 0.119, p > 0.05) also does not play any significant role in workplace deviance. It was concluded that value congruence and emotional labour influenced workplace deviance while peer influence and religiousity had no significant role in workplace deviance
