Abstract
This study examined the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) platforms in place to deliver e-payment services in Nigeria. It investigated the factors influencing the deployment and adoption of the services and also determined the levels and patterns of adoption as well as customers’ satisfaction with the services. This was with a view to facilitating the effective diffusion of the technology among the populace.
The study was carried out in the Southwestern Nigeria states of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires. Multistage random sampling method was used in all the states selected. Data were collected using 300 copies of questionnaire administered to banks, shopping malls, eateries, filling stations, hotels and switching companies in the study area. The questionnaire elicited information on the ICT platforms in place to deliver e-payment services such as Point of Sale (POS) Terminals, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), Mobile, and Internet/Web facilities. Such information included numbers, locations and spread of the platforms. The questionnaire also collected information on the factors influencing the deployment of the technology in line with the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) Model. In addition, it obtained information on the levels and patterns of adoption of e-payment in terms of the volume and value of transactions processed on each platform and evaluated customers’ satisfaction with respect to security and privacy, convenience, cost reduction and time reduction among others. Secondary data were sourced from CBN annual reports and publications. The data obtained were analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics.
The results showed that ATMs have become ubiquitous and they dominated the e-payment platforms deployed by the commercial banks in Nigeria in the last five years with ATM (100%), POS (96.4%), Mobile (52.4%) and Internet/Web (40.5%). Logit regression model showed that education and occupation levels were positive factors in adopting the services while gender, age and income levels were not. In addition, the results also indicated that on a Likert-rating scale of 1 to 5 (maximum), the mean scores for the factors influencing the deployment and adoption of the services at p ≤ 0.05 were 4.3, 4.2, 4.1 and 3.9 for effort expectance, perceived credibility, infrastructural support facilities and efficiency of usage, respectively. Furthermore, the results showed that levels of adoption were ATM (94.7%), Web (1.5%), POS (2.3%) and Mobile (1.5%) in value terms, and ATM (98.1%), Web (0.6%), POS (0.7%) and Mobile (0.6%) in volume terms. The patterns of adoption revealed that four banks comprising GT Bank, First Bank, Access Bank and Zenith Bank were the industry key players having commanded 6 –10 percent each in terms of e-payment platform distribution. The levels of customers’ satisfaction with the services on Likert-rating scale of 1 to 5 (maximum) were found to be 4.3, 4.1, and 3.9 at p ≤ 0.05 for security and privacy, convenience as well as time and cost reduction, respectively.
The study concluded that the adoption of e-payment services is steadily on the upswing in Nigeria and that measures to enhance the diffusion within the consumer retail landscape must be put in place for the effectiveness of monetary policy.
