Abstract
Pharmacology, a term derived from the Greek word pharmakon ("poison" in classic Greek, "drug" in modern Greek) is concerned with the study of drug action. Specifically, pharmacology is the examination of the interactions between a living organism and chemicals that affect normal or abnormal biochemical functions. This includes drug composition, synthesis and drug design, molecular and cellular communication, molecular diagnostics, interactions, toxicology, chemical biology, therapy, as well as medical applications and antipathogenic capabilities.
Pharmacology has two major branches: Pharmacokinetics, which refers to the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs. Pharmacodynamics, which refers to the molecular, biochemical and physiological effect of drugs including drug mechanism of action.
