It also evaluated the level of breastfeeding education in the school curriculum and assessed the knowledge of secondary school students about breastfeeding in the study area. It further examined the attitude of students about breastfeeding in the study area. These were with the view of providing empirical information on knowledge and attitude of students on breastfeeding among secondary school students in Ife metropolis. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. The population comprised of male and female SS1-SS3 secondary school students in Ife metropolis. The study sample consisted of 200 senior secondary school students (SSS1-SSS3) using multi stage sampling techniques. The two Local Government Areas (LGA) in Ife metropolis (Ife East and Ife Central) were used for the study and two schools were selected from each LGA. Thereafter, convenience sampling technique was used to administer the questionnaire to students who were available in school on the day of visit. Research instrument used to obtain data was a modified questionnaire adopted from a sample of The Iowa Infant Feeding attitude/knowledge questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study showed that many (79.5%) of the respondents affirmed that they were taught breastfeeding as a topic, many (76.5%) understood the concept being taught under breastfeeding education which implies that respondents’ level of awareness of breastfeeding education is considerably high. Study also showed that 78.5% of students in the study area have a good knowledge about breastfeeding. Finally, it indicated that respondents’ attitude and intention towards breastfeeding in Ife metropolis is positive (61.5%). The study concluded that the students have a good understanding and a positive intention about breastfeeding despite the low rate of breastfeeding in the society. Therefore, it is proposed that the use of a unique structured educational program/curriculum on breastfeeding for secondary school students should be developed by all stakeholders so as to encourage positive breastfeeding attitudes and intention in the society.
