Abstract
The study examined the arguments between essentialists and anti-essentialists, on the one hand, and realists and anti-realists, on the other, on the existence of natural kinds. It defended essentialist arguments justifying the existence of natural kinds. It also assessed some influential criticisms of essentialism, with a view to establishing their adequacy or otherwise. Furthermore, it explored how biological taxonomy could support essentialism and how this position opened up a debate in the Philosophy of Science about the reality of theoretical entities through which the existence of kinds in nature could be further established.
