| dc.description.abstract | The study assessed the management pattern and patronage of museums in the south western Nigeria. It examined the attributes of the museums; assessed the museum management practices; evaluated the patronage pattern of selected museums; and examined the socio-economic potentials of museums in the study area. This was with a view to determining the management approaches and patronage of museums in the south-western Nigeria. Primary and secondary data were used. Primary data consisted of two sets of questionnaires (for Management and Tourists). The questionnaires were set to collect data on management of museum, patronage pattern and tourist perception of the museums. The eight museums in the study area served as the population for the study. Management questionnaires were administered to the first top three managers of each of the museums in the study area while Tourist’s questionnaires were administered to the six museums with gallery in the study area. 20 percent of adult tourists was extracted from five years estimated monthly adult attendance records. A total of 328 questionnaires were administered (for 304 tourists and 24 management staff). These questionnaires were administered within a month in each of the museum’s stations. Secondary data on tourists attendance, history of the museums, types of exhibition and classes of objects were extracted from the archives of the museums and other relevant sources. Data collected were analysed with the use of Pearson’s correlation and described using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, and appropriate charts. Result showed that the museums in the study area were characterised by many attributes ranging from types of museum; the gallery exhibition; objects collections; and several other services available in the museums such as craft village, museum kitchen and children activity room. In the museum management practices, the study revealed that the national museums are owned and funded majorly by the federal government. Occasionally, they were financially assisted by state government, foreign bodies, and non-governmental organisations, yet the fund was still not sufficient. Also, the result revealed that the patronage pattern in the study area decreases from Lagos to Ife, Ibadan, Osogbo, Owo, and Abeokuta with 66749, 37620, 17342, 13639, 3719, and 1396 visitors in that order. Also, the result showed that there is no significant relationship between museum management and level of patronage (-0.6850: P≤0.549), which implies that management of museums does not affect its patronage in the study area. However, a significant difference was noted between patronage of museums and their locations with the F value of 10.004: P≤0.00 and the degree of freedom of 5. That is, patronage pattern of selected museums varies with locations. The study concluded that attributes of museums such as gallery exhibition, museum kitchen, quality of education services, and other essential services like craft village, children activity room and parking spaces provided in the museums and museum locations enhance patronage pattern.
