Educational Needs of Librarians in the Digital Environment

This has been done with a view to identifying the gaps and making recommendations as appropriate vis-à-vis the designing and modeling of digital education in Nigeria.

Documenting genealogies

This article investigates the tracing and documentation of genealogies among the Yoruba of Southwest Nigeria using the semiological mechanism of tribal-facial marks. The study lends itself to qualitative research methods and called for the involvement of memory institutions (libraries, archives, and museums). A purposive sampling method, including a combination of focus group interviews and semistructured individual interviews, was deployed in the selection of four categories of participants. Data obtained were transcribed and analyzed using the recursive abstraction technique. The study established the indigenous practice of using indelible facial marks as a form of documentation and tracing of lineages and subethnic groups among the Yoruba. Although they are an endangered species, this study highlights some traditional methods of documentation and justifies a change in the narrative by advocating for an intensification of formalized documentation of the art vis-à-vis relevance to lineage and subethnic genealogies and situating the role of memory institutions in the project. Recommendations include intensive information harvesting and documentation enabled by the development of an active information policy that will take into cognizance various genres of indigenous knowledge systems, including tribal-facial marking systems, as a tool of genealogy.

Students Perspective of Library Instruction Programme: a Case Study of Obafemi Awolowo University

The paper reported the findings of a survey on the students’ perception of the library instruction course in Obafemi Awolowo University. The usefulness, status, content and organisation of the course were examined. The survey confirmed the usefulness of the course while the course content and organization needed improvement. About 50 percent of the students felt that more hours were needed in order to exhaustively treat the topics. Opinion on its non credit-earning status had a 3:2 ratio in support. About 40 percent of the respondents would rather have the course to be credit-earning.

It also refers to enterprises that spin yarn from fiber or synthetic materials and to the finisher and dyers of fabrics. Textile irrespective or its raw material and pattern. plays an important role in the Society. Textile in any society is important for covering, transmission of information propagation and preservation of cultural heritage from one generation.

America has succeeded in evolving a political system that is both enviable and significant in world politics in the last two centuries. The system of governance and the electoral processes have been institutionalized. Peace and serenity characterised the electoral scene in America and this calls for a salient question. What is the trick?: The flow of information is not a luxury. It is a life and death necessity; life and death for industries, for communities, for nations economic health, for survival, for deterrence of war, for progress, for posterity. This is not an exaggeration, it is a hard fact.' There is no doubt that in any process of enlightenment, political in particular, information services provided in a nation are of immense importance. America has succeeded in operating a system of governance with a lesser degree of confusion that obtains in many other nations. So far, America has held a total of forty-two elections since the declaration of independence in 1776. Even though there are many elements that have contributed to the success and progress of their political culture, the nation's body politics has in its wheels a dynamic information system. This paper seeks to take an overview of the American system of government and discuss the role of information services in the electoral processes. It also discusses implications for Nigeria.

A Computerized System for Managing Overdue Books in University Libraries

The current economic crisis in the nation has necessitated a prudent management of educational resources. Libraries, therefore need to preserve their books and non-book materials to ensure their use by both present and future library users. The Library Penalty System (LPS) was developed for university libraries. It could however be used by any library that has computerize its services. It consists of two major modules and three sub-modules. Each module-and sub-module has a unique function. Within the sub-modules, functions were used for specific operations. The system using the versatility of C++language was tested on Compaq Desktop Pentium with satisfactory outputs obtained.

Subject Catalogue Use at the Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria

A survey of the subject catalogue use at the Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife was carried out for a period of six weeks using questionnaire. The focus of the study was to find out the extent to which the subject catalogue in the library, met the user’s needs, the level of use and the effectiveness of subject classification. The data was analysed using percentages. Results showed 88% usage level of the subject catalogue as well as 85% success rate of searches.

First Ladies Information Profile and Women's Political Empowerment in Nigeria

Discourses on women affairs are daily becoming wider in scope and veering into every area of human endeavour, hence, the relevance of feminism in the body politic of a nation. In addition, democracy has become the most popular form of government worldwide with America taking the lead. For instance, America had come to solid terms about her form of government since the declaration of independence in the year 1776 (Pole, 1993:212). Since then, "the term democratic Government has become almost synonymous with the American governance and electoral processes" (Adegboye, '1997:498). Nigeria only gained her independence in 1960. She has since 'Convulsed' with spates of Civilian and Military governments, the latter being the most frequent and longest dispensation she ever had. Only recently, precisely May 29, 1999 she commenced the 4th Republic since independence.

Music Librarianship in Nigerian University Libraries

The above conception gives an apt description of the concerns of every good information service in general and particularly Music Librarianship in Nigerian University Libraries. The library remains an agent of posterity charged with the responsibility of transmitting information (including cultural values of a people from generation to generation) with a view of educating and enhancing the utilization of such information by their potential clientele. To this end, the library has been described as an organization primarily charged with the responsibility of selecting, acquiring, processing, preserving and disseminating different forms of information (Adegboye, 1998: 12). The nature of library services as explained above, therefore makes the profession cross-disciplinary. The Librarian stands as a 'specialist in information management and as a 'generalist' as he tries to 'befriend all areas of knowledge (Adegboye, 1998: 12).

Development of an Automated Fund Management System for Nigerian Universities

In realization of the strategic role of the library in the academic programme of tertiary institutions, particularly the universities, the Federal Government of Nigeria in1992 reached an agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities to make libraries enjoy a separate fund allocation of 10% of overall vote to each university from the Federal Government. This development engendered the need for the institutions to develop a system of managing and monitoring the allocations. This paper reports the design of an the automated library accounting system (ALAS) for use by the Accounting Section of Libraries. Trial implementation was with the Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The developed computer package uses the VISUAL BASIC programming language working in a WINDOWS environment The system consists of a menu-driven program to perform the task of vote allocation, expenditure monitoring, report generation and file backup, amongst others. The simple design presented here records transactions against accounts, and provides a picture of the relevant income and expenditure profiles. It disregards accounting for physical assets (including infrastructure) and standard services ,on the real assumption that the parent organization still retains control of these. The developed system would enable libraries to improve their financial and indeed client centered operational efficiency by generating up-to-date financial reports promptly.

Acquisition, Management, Use and Prospect of Grey Literature in University Libraries of Developing Countries

This paper gave an exposition on the definition of grey literature as those categories of literature which are issued mainly for information purposes and are not commonly controlled by commercial publishing interest. It also attempted all extensive description of what constitute grey literature with a view to bringing out their various characteristics. The work further gave a general overview of the rule (4 grey literature. Among other factors, they serve as good complements of published literature even though their significance have not been brought to the lime light as other published resources in university libraries. The sources of grey literature were identified as those that were unpublished and were not acquired through: normal book trade channels. Methods of acquisitions by practice in university libraries were mainly through direct purchase from the creating agencies as well as through gifts and exchanges programmes among the creators and the university libraries. Also, the management of grey literature vary from library to library and there was not yet evolved a standardized method of maintenance especially in the areas of cataloguing and classification. There was evidence that grey literature were being put into use but quite a lot of current awareness was still needed for optimum maximization of use of these resources. Problems facing the prospects of grey literature were also highlighted and recommendations were also made towards boosting prospects of grey Literature.

Preservation and conservation of newspapers in Nigeria university libraries

The paper gave general overview of the concepts of Preservation and Conservation of newspapers as found in literature as well as international practices. Case studies of newspapers preservation and conservation procedures of five Federal Universities in Southwestern Nigeria were presented from which extrapolations applicable to practices in other Nigerian Universities were drawn. Findings revealed that newspaper management in University Libraries was still below international standard. The paper proffered a holistic approach to solving the problem through the drawing of a national strategy for newspaper preservation and conservation in Nigeria.

Information Source Accessibility and Usage as Determinants of Business Performance of Community Banks in Osun State, Nigeria.

The paper discusses an investigation on the relationship between information source accessibility and business performance of the community banks over a six-year period. The Expost-Facto Survey design was used in collecting data from 258 managers of 43 functioning community banks at the time of study with a retrieval rate of 80%. The data were analyzed using both the descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that the customer source was the most used of all the information sources. The personal sources were also preferred to the impersonal sources while information accessibility had a positive relationship with the banks’ business performance. The study therefore recommended the creation of greater awareness of information relevance and sourcing using formalized information packaging and managing systems.

The paper took cognizance of the general principles of indexing and consummated this by highlighting the special idiosyncracies of legal publications and legal indexing. The paper serves as a library instruction and reference service tool for legal practitioners and legal academics.
