Dental caries and periodontal disease (gum diseases, akokoro) are the commonest chronic diseases globally. Dental caries is ubiquitous in all populations throughout the world and it is the key factor responsible for dental pain (toothache). It is also the predominant indication for dental restorations and the most important cause of tooth loss in younger people. Dental caries affects the mineralized tooth tissue (enamel, dentine, and cementum). It is seldom self-limiting. If left untreated, it progresses to involve the dental pulp and results into a variety of sequelae
