Abstract
The study examined the widespread of sexual coercion among female students in tertiary institutions in Oyo Central Senatorial District. It identified the categories of female students that are mostly coerced in the study area and investigated the social factors determining sexual coercion among female students in the study area. It also investigated the economic factors determining sexual coercion and examined measures to curb sexual coercion among female undergraduates. These were a view to providing information that could help to curb sexual coercion among females in tertiary institutions in the Senatorial District. Descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The population for the study consisted of 29,816 female students in public and private tertiary institutions in Oyo Central Senatorial District, Oyo State Nigeria. The sample size for the study comprised 320 female students drawn from four out of the existing eleven Local Government areas using multi- stage sampling procedure. Four LGAs were selected from 11 Local Government areas using simple random sampling technique. From each of the selected LGAs, two tertiary institutions (One private and One public) making a total of eight were selected using stratified random sampling technique. Forty female students were selected from each of the private and public institution using simple random sampling technique to give a total of 320 respondents. A self-designed questionnaire titled Socio-economic Determinants of Sexual Coercion (SDSC) was used for data collection. Data collected were analysed using frequency, percentages and Spearman Rho correlation statistics. The results showed factors such as indecent dressing (r=0.194; p < 0.05), peer influence (r=0.145, p < 0.05) and exposure to pornography (r= 0.131, p < 0.05) significantly determines sexual coercion among female students in the study area. Economic factors such as poverty (r = -0.080, p = >.184) and parental occupation (r = -0.037, p = > .536) did not significantly determine sexual coercion among the sampled students. Majority of respondents (85%) opined that family life education gender sensitive policies, counselling and punishment for perpetrators were measures that could curb sexual coercion in the study area. The study concluded that social factors of indecent dressing, peer influence and exposure to pornography significantly determined sexual coercion among female students
