Abstract
The study investigated gait, posture characteristics predictors of musculoskeletal disorders and falls among aged retirees of Ife Central Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria. The goal of the study was to establish the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and falls among aged retirees. Likewise, investigated musculoskeletal disorders, postural and gait characteristics among aged retired elderly. More so, the study also examines the relationship among gaits, postural and musculoskeletal disorders and falls. The study adopted descriptive survey design and made use of purposive sampling techniques to recruit Three hundred (300) retirees for the study. Fall Efficacy Scale (FES), Nomadic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), Functional Gait Assessment Scale (FGA), and Gait Ability and Postural Instability–Gait Difficulty (PIGD), were research instrument used in collecting data from the respondents. The result revealed that the prevalence majority having poor functional gait (63.7%) and abnormal posture (59.3%). The result also indicated that majority of the participants reported at least one MSD in the past year (86.3%) and past week (80.7%), while 44.3% and 33.3% of the participants had multiple MSD in the past year and week respectively. Low back pain was the most prevalent MSD in the past year (62.0%) and past week (57.7%). The result also indicated that there was significant association between each of marital status, living condition, years of retirement, level of education, and presence of hypertension and diabetes, and falls (p < 0.05). In addition, falls was negatively correlated with gait (r = -0.52; p < 0.001) and positively correlated with postural characteristics (r = 0.39; p < 0.001). The results showed that falls was associated with presence of MSD in the past year (χ2=31.196; p < 0.001), past week (χ2=28.886; p < 0.001) and presence of multiple MSD. Similarly, falls was significantly associated with gait (χ2=32.156; p < 0.001) and posture (χ2=70.102; p< 0.001). The study concluded that there was high prevalence of fall, musculoskeletal disorders, postural and gait abnormalities among aged retirees in Ife Central Local Government. There was significant association between musculoskeletal disorders, postural and gait characteristics and falls among the old retirees in the study area.
