    Assessment of yoruba vocabulary and sentence formation skills of lower primary school pupils of Ondo state

    The study assessed the level of Yoruba vocabulary development of lower primary school pupils in Ondo State; examined the Yoruba Language sentence formation skills of lower primary school pupils in Ondo State; compared the Yoruba vocabulary and sentence formation skills of children of Yoruba elite and non-elite groups in lower primary schools in Ondo State; and investigated the possible interference of local dialects on the Yoruba vocabulary development and sentence formation skills of lower primary school pupils in the study area. These were with a view to determining the level of Yoruba vocabulary development and sentence formation skills of lower primary school pupils in Ondo State. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population for the study consisted of primary Three pupils in Ondo State. The sample for the study comprised 400 pupils selected from eight major dialectal zones (Akure, Owo, Ondo, Akoko, Ikale, Oke-Igbo, Ile-Oluji and Ilaje) in Ondo State. Fifty participants, consisting of 25 children of elite parents and 25 children of non-elite parents) were selected from primary schools in each dialectical zone. Ten pupils were selected (five pupils from five private schools and five pupils from five public schools) in each category using a simple random sampling technique. In each school, an arm of the primary Three class was selected purposively because the pupils were expected to have been exposed to some Yoruba Language instructions. From each primary three class, five pupils were selected for the study using a simple random sampling technique. An instrument titled ‘’Yoruba Composition Test (YCT) was developed by the researcher and administered on the study participants. The YCT was used to test the vocabulary development and sentence formation skills and positive interference of local dialects of the lower primary school pupils in the state. Data collected after the administration of the instrument were analysed using frequency, percentage, and independent sample t-test and regression analysis statistical tools. Results of the study showed that the level of Yoruba vocabulary development of lower primary school pupils was moderate at 55.2% in Ondo State. The results also showed that the level of Yoruba Language sentence formation skills of lower primary school pupils was moderate at 54.3% in the study area. In addition, results showed that there was significant difference between Yoruba vocabulary development and sentence formation skills of children of Yoruba elite and non-elite groups in Ondo State (t = 16.677; p < 0.05). Furthermore, the results indicated that there was significant interference of local dialects on the Yoruba vocabulary and sentence formation skills of lower primary school pupils in the study area (F = 7.753; p < 0.05). The study concluded that the levels of Yoruba vocabulary development and sentence formation skills of lower primary school pupils were moderate in Ondo State.

    Child trafficking and force labour among school-aged children in Edo State, Nigeria.

    The study investigated child trafficking and force labour among school-aged children in Edo State. The study specifically determined the trend and pattern child trafficking and forced labour in Edo state; determined the factors responsible for both the trend and pattern of child trafficking in Edo State; assessed the level of awareness of child trafficking and forced labour of school aged among key stakeholders in education in the study area; and examined the effectiveness of government interventions in the state at ameliorating child trafficking and forced trafficking and force labour in Edo State .

    Assesment of Home Grown School Feeding Programme in Lower Primary Schools in Southwestern Nigeria

    The study examined the level of compliance to Home Grown School Feeding Programme in lower primary school in southwestern, Nigeria. It also assessed the trend of enrolment of pupils in lower primary schools in the region since the commencement of HGSFP; it determined the trend of retention of pupils in lower primary schools in the study area; it further examined the academic achievement of beneficiaries of HGSFP in lower primary schools in the region and assessed stakeholders’ views of the success of the stated objectives of Home Grown School Feeding Programme (HGSFP) in lower primary schools in Southwestern Nigeria. These were with view to providing information on the state of HGSFP in lower primary schools in Southwestern Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population consisted of head teachers, classroom teachers, food vendors, parents and farmers. The sample for the study comprised 108 head teachers, 324 primary school teachers, 211 vendors, 216 parents and 108 farmers supplying food items to the food vendors. Purposive sampling procedure was used to select the sample for the study. Four research instruments were used for the study namely: School Feeding Assessment Questionnaire for Teachers (SFAQT), Questionnaire for head teachers on school feeding programme (QHTSFP), Parents, Farmers and Food Vendors interview guide on school feeding programme (PFFVIG) and Pupils Academic Achievement Records (PAAR).
