Abstract
The study investigated the teachers’ content knowledge of environmental education in Biology in secondary schools in Osun State, examined teachers’ pedagogical knowledge of environmental education in Biology in secondary schools in Osun State, and determined students’ self-efficacy of environmental education in secondary schools in Osun State. These were with a view to assessing how teachers implement the components of Environmental Education within the senior secondary school Biology Curriculum in Osun State. The study employed a descriptive survey design. The population for the study comprised senior secondary school Biology teachers and students in Osun State. The study sample consisted of 24 teachers and 240 students selected using a multistage sampling procedure. From the three senatorial districts in Osun State, four Local Government Areas were selected using simple random sampling technique. From each of the Local Government Areas, two public schools were selected using a simple random sampling technique making a total of 24 schools. In each of the schools selected, 10 students in a class of SS3 Biology and their teachers were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Three research instruments were used to collect data for the study. They were Biology Teachers’ Environmental Education Content Knowledge Observation Checklist (BTEECKOC) which was used to gather information on the level of Biology Teachers’ Content Knowledge of Environmental Education. Biology Teachers’ Environmental Education Pedagogical Knowledge Observation Checklist (BTEEPKOC) was used to measure the level of Biology Teachers’ Pedagogical Knowledge of Environmental Education and Students’ Selfefficacy of Environmental Education Questionnaire (SSEEQ) was used to collect information on Students’ Self-efficacy of Environmental Education in Osun State Secondary Schools. The data gathered were subjected to frequency, mean and percentages. The result implies that the majority of Biology teachers have a high level of content knowledge of environmental education with 75.0% showing high level of content knowledge while 25.0% were moderate. Also, it was shown from the level of the observed teachers’ pedagogical knowledge that 37.5% of the respondents have a high level of pedagogical knowledge while 62.5% have a moderate level of pedagogical knowledge with an average mean of (𝑥̅=3.13). In addition, the result for research question 3 (three) showed that students’ have adequate self-efficacy of environmental education with 59.6% of the respondents having high self-efficacy and 40.4% having moderate self-efficacy of environmental education. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher concluded that Biology teachers have high level of content knowledge of environmental education in the study area. The study also concluded that teachers’ level of pedagogical knowledge of environmental components of biology curriculum implementation is adequate as well as moderate and the results from research question three shows that the self-efficacy of students is adequate.
