- ItemOpen AccessInfluence of staff development programmes on teachers' instructional task performance in Kwara State primary Schools, Nigeria.(Department of Education Management, Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Osun State., 2021) Atere Kafayat JumokeThe study investigated the types of staff development programmes available for primary school teachers in Kwara State; determined the frequency of conducting the programmes for the teachers; assessed the mode of selection of teachers for the programmes; and examined the influence of the development programmes on teachers task performance in Kwara State primary schools. These were with a view to providing information on the influence of development programmes on teachers task performance in Kwara State primary schools. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The Population of the study consisted all 14,206 public primary school teachers and 1,406 head teachers in the three senatorial districts of Kwara State. The sample for the study comprised 400 teachers and 40 head teachers which were selected using multistage sampling procedure. First, two senatorial districts were randomly selected in the State. Also, proportionate random sampling technique was used to select five and three local governments from the sampled senatorial districts (Kwara South and Kwara Central) respectively. In addition, 10 teachers with minimum of five years’ experience and one head teacher were selected from each of the sampled school using purposive sampling technique. A self-designed validated research instrument titled “Staff Development and Teachers’ Instructional Task Performance” (SDTITP) was used to collect data for the study. The reliability of the instrument was ensured with a coefficient index of 0.77. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage scores, as well as inferential statistics of regression analysis. The results showed that in-service training (76.1%); mentoring (68.6%), seminar (63.9%); and workshop (62.7%); are the types of development programmes available for primary school teachers in Kwara State; frequencies of conducting the programme for the Kwara State primary schools teachers were once every session (88.4%) and once every term (68.2%); and the mode used by the management in selecting staff for the development programmes in Kwara State primary schools were based on bias/prejudice (68.2%), seniority (65%), and subject taught (72%). The result further showed that staff development programmes had significant influence on teachers’ task performance in Kwara State primary schools 58.9% (Adj. R2=.589), in which, in-service training programmes (B=0.245); workshop (B=0.426); seminar (B=0.400); and Mentoring (B=0.178) had a positive significant influence on teachers’ task performance respectively; conference was not significant (B=-0.154). The study concluded that the development programmes of in-sevice training, mentoring, seminar, and workshop significantly influenced teachers’ instructional task performance in Kwara State primary schools.
- ItemOpen AccessInfluence of parents' and caregivers' interactions on emotional and behavioural patterns of children in Osun state.(Institute of Education, Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University., 2022) ADERIBIGBE Tomi BlessingThis study investigated the interactions (help, tolerance, tenderness and appreciation) of parents with their children not older than eight years in Osun State, it examined the interactions of caregivers with the children under their care between the age of zero to eight years in the study area, it assessed the influence of parents’ and caregivers’ interactions with the children on their emotion in the State and assessed the influence of parents and caregivers’ interactions with the children’s behaviour. These were with a view to providing empirical information on the influence of parents’ and caregivers’ interaction on children’s emotions and behavioural patterns in their early years of development. The study employed descriptive survey research design. Population of the study comprised parents and caregivers of children between ages zero and eight years in Osun State. The sample size comprised 120 children, 120 parents and 120 caregivers using multi-stage sampling procedures. From the three senatorial districts in the State, two Local Government Areas (LGAs) were randomly selected. From the selected LGAs, one private primary school and one public primary school were selected using random sampling technique. 10 parents and 10 caregivers with children between ages zero and eight were purposively selected. Two instruments were used: Questionnaire on Caregivers’ Interaction with Young Children (QCIYC) and Questionnaire on Parents’ Interaction with Young Children (QPIYC). Data collected were analysed using mean ranking and regression. The result of the study showed that the interactions (help MS=3.9, tolerance MS=3.84, tenderness MS=3.73 and appreciation MS=3.7) of parents with their children not older than eight years in Osun State were high, having the mean score that falls above the 3.0 benchmark used to measure the variables identified. The result also revealed that the interactions (help MS=3.61, tolerance MS=3.68, tenderness MS=3.59 and appreciation MS=3.53) of caregivers with the children under their care between the age of zero and eight years in the study area were high, with the mean score above 3.0. Furthermore, result showed that there was a significant influence of parents’ and caregivers’ interactions with the children on their emotion in the State with R-squared value of 0.303 and p-value=0.001. Similarly, there was significant influence of parents’ and caregivers’ interactions with the behaviour of children with the R-squared value of 0.285 and p-value=0.001. The study concluded that parents’ and caregivers’ interactions with children have a great influence on the emotional and behavioural patterns of children in the early years of development.
- ItemOpen AccessAssessment of federal road safety corp's road safety community education programme in Osun state, Nigeria 1999 to 2019.(Department of adult education and lifelong learning, Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University., 2022) ADEYELU Omowale EbunoluwaThis study investigated the prevalence of road accident in Osun State from 1999-2019. It appraised the adult teaching methods adopted by FRSC members in the community education programmes and assessed the level of community members’ participation in community education. It also examined the factors which determined community participation in community education projects between 2010 and 2019. These were with a view to assessing the relevance and adequacy of the FRSC community education projects in the State. The survey design was adopted for the study. The population comprised FRSC officials and community members in Osun State. The sample for this study consisted of 60 respondents including 30 Osun State FRSC officials purposively selected from the FRSC State Secretariat and 30 community members consisting of religions/traditional and association leaders who were selected using multi-stage sampling techniques. Two questionnaires and one interview guide were used to collect data: The questionnaires termed “Osun FRSC Officials” Questionnaire on Community Education” (OFOQCE) and “Community Development Group Questionnaire on Community Education” (CDGQ) were used. Also an in-depth interview guide titled “Community Members’ Interview on FRSC in Community Education Programme. (CMINCEP) was used” Data collected were analysed using percentages and inferential statistics while content analysis was used to analyse the responses from the qualitative interviews. The results showed that there was high prevalence of road accidents in the study area as there were 364 road accidents involving 2,265 people in year 2019. The results also showed that drama method 41.66%, public campaign and rally 33.33%, radio and television 14.58%, jingles and sensitization 4.18%, workshop and seminar methods 6.25% were employed by the FRSC in community and road safety education programme. The study revealed that 45.71% of the total respondents fully participated in the community education programme. Meanwhile, 40% of the respondents somewhat participated in the community education programme while 14% of the total respondents did not participate at all. The findings also revealed that unemployment, poverty, illiteracy and need for skill acquisition hindered community members’ participation in FRSC’s education programme. The study concluded that the community education projects provided by FRSC were relevant and adequate as they met the needs of the various community members as attested to by the level of their participation in the projects.

Obafemi Awolowo University., 2022) ISIAKA, Ahmed AdekunleThis study determined the level of IECD policy awareness and utilization in Oyo State primary schools; it also ascertained the extent of the Utilisation of the IECD policy provision in the study area; it further examined the implementation of identified policy provision in the study area, and lastly investigated the challenges facing the implementation of IECD policy provisions in the study area. These were done with a view to providing information on the level implementation of Integrated Early Childhood Education Development (IECD) Policy in Oyo State, Nigeria.The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for the study comprised 12,472 public primary school teachers (TESCOM, 2019) in Oyo State. The sample size consisted of 300 respndents. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select the sample for the study. From the five administrative zones in Oyo State, three were selected using simple random sampling technique. Ten primary schools were randomly selected from each of the administrative zones, making a total of 30 schools. Ten teachers were selected from each of the schools using purposive sampling technique. The 10 teachers of such sampled schools made the sampled population for the study. Four research instruments were used for the study namely: Awareness and Utilisation of IECD policy Questionnaire (AUIQ), Teachers’ utilisation of IECD Policy Questionnaire (TUIQ), Implementation of IECD Policy Questionnaire Checklist and Factors Affecting the implementation of IECD Policy Questionnaire (FAIQ). Data collected were analysed using appropriate descriptive statistics such as frequent count and simple percentage were used for the research question. Results showed that the level of awareness and utilisation is moderate with 42.72%. Result also showed the extent of the utilisation of the IECD policy provision in the study area indicated the teaching of rudiments of numbers, letters, colours, shapes, forms, etc., through play as done as many times as possible with a mean score of =2.90. Results on how far reaching is the IECD policy provision implemented is identified in the study area include: cardboard books (𝑥̅=2.30), colourful bulletin board display ( 𝑥̅ =2.25), and many more. The prominent challenges facing the implementation of IECD provisions in the study area were cognitive development facilitation 86.0%, physical skills development facilitation 86.0%, socio-emotional skills development facilitation 86.0% and remuneration 72.0%, identification of child basic right 86.0%. The study concluded that the level of IECD policy awareness and its utilisation was moderat in Oyo State primary schools.
- ItemOpen AccessManagement of computer assisted learning, instructional strategies and learning outcomes in pre-basic schools in southwestern Nigeria.(Department of Educational management, Faculty of Education. Obafemi Awolowo University., 2022) JEMBOLA, Olujoke EmilyThis study assessed the type of Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) facilities and equipment available in pre-basic schools in Southwestern Nigeria; determined the extent of the use of CALtools and instructional strategies in managing instruction in the study area and compared the use of CAL in managing instruction in public and private pre-basic schools. It also examined the influence of CAL on children learning outcomes in literacy (reading, writing) and numeracy (counting, sorting); determined the influence of CAL technologies on children skill acquisition (spelling, shading) and behavioural patterns (attentiveness, cooperation); and, examined the problems teachers encountered in using CAL tools for teaching. These were with a view to providing empirical information on the management and influence of CAL on learning outcomes among pre-basic school children in Southwestern Nigeria.The study adopted the descriptive survey research design using quantitative approach. The population comprised the 36,332 teachers in Southwestern Nigeria which included 22,066 public and 14,266 private pre-basic and primary school teachers respectively. A sample of 381 publicand 378 private primary school teachers were selected using multi-stage sampling procedure. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting three states out of the six Southwestern states with three LGAs selected from each of the three senatorial districts of the selected states. Seven public and seven private schools were selected from each sampled LGA and six teachers selected from each sampled school. Furthermore, a teacher was selected to teach with CAL tools for observation while the nursery two class was selected for Test of Skill Acquisition on CAL.The study used Management of Computer Assisted Learning, Instructional Strategies and Learning Outcomes in Pre-basic Schools Questionnaire (MACALISLOPS-Q), Teachers’ Observation Schedule on CAL Application (TOSCALA) and Test of Skill Acquisition on CAL in Pre-basic Schools (TESACALPS) for data collection. Data collected were analysed using percentages and mean scores to answer the questions while the hypotheses were tested using Analysis of variance. The results showed that the types of CAL facilities and equipment used in teaching in the study area are Computer desktop / laptop (81.2%), interactive white board (53.9%), television (75.6%), smart phones 59.4%, DVDs and CDs (69.4%). The extent of use of CAL was ranked high in private (r = 4.22, 80%) but low in public pre-basic schools (r = 2.18, 40%). Results indicated a significant difference in the use of CAL tools in managing instruction in public and private schools (F=204.959, p<0.05). Results further showed a significant influence of CAL on children Literacy and Numeracy (F-= 4.517, p<0.05), skill acquisition and behavioural pattern (F=14.313, p<0.05) in private pre-basic schools with no significant influence in public schools (F=1.095, p<0.05); (F=3,587, p<0.05). Findings showed that teachers encountered various problems in application of CAL in the study area. The study concluded that Management of Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) and instructional strategies have significant influence on the learning outcomes among the private pre-basic school children due to its availability and usage, but had no significant influence on public pre-basic school children due to unavailability in Southwestern Nigeria.
- ItemOpen AccessQuality Assurance Processes and Effectiveness of Early Childhood Education Centres in Ekiti State(The Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University, 2022) AKINOLA, Oluwatoyin, BolanleThe study identified the quality assurance processes used in Ekiti State Early Childhood Education Centres. It determined the frequency of use of the processes in the centres by location. It also investigated the level of policy implementation in Early Childhood Education Centres in Ekiti State (compliance with minimum standard and curriculum) and ascertained the adequacy of quality assurance processes for effectiveness of Early Childhood Education Centres in the study area. These were with a view to providing empirical information on the quality assurance processes and the effectiveness of Early Childhood Education Centres (ECECs) in Ekiti State. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population for the study comprised all early childhood education centres, their administrators and teachers/ caregivers in Ekiti State. Sample consisted of 30 head teachers and 60 kindergarten care givers selected using multi stage sampling procedure. From each of the three Senatorial Districts in Ekiti State, simple random sampling technique was used to select two Local Government Areas (LGAs). From each of the six LGAs, three public schools and two government approved private schools were randomly selected. The head teachers and two teachers who had worked for at least a year in the schools and their particular classes were selected as sample. Two research instruments: Quality Assurance Processes Observation Scale (QAPOS) and Quality Assurance for Early Childhood Education Effectiveness Interview Guide (QQAECEEIG), were used to collect data for the study. Data collected were analysed using frequency counts and percentages. The results showed that the quality assurance processes used in Ekiti State early childhood education centres were internal supervision by Head caregivers; external supervision/monitoring by Federal Government Officials, Universal Basic Education Council Officials (UBEC); State. Universal basic Education Officers (SUBEB); Local Government Area Education Officers (LGAEO); and Professional Development of Teachers (PDT). The results showed that internal supervision by the head teachers was the most frequently used (33%) quality assurance process in Ekiti State Early Childhood Educational Centres; this was followed by external monitoring by LGAE Officers (23%); then professional development of teachers (22%) and monitoring by SUBEB Officers (20%). The least used quality assurance process was monitoring by UBEC Officials, which was rarely used (2%). The results also showed that the level of policy implementation was moderate (52.4%) for compliance with minimum standards and very high (70%) for use of prescribed curriculum in early childhood education centres in Ekiti State. The results further showed that quality assurance processes for effectiveness of early childhood education centres were adequate (62.5%). The study concluded that quality assurance processes had positive influence on the effectiveness of early childhood education centres (ECECs) in Ekiti State.

The goal of the study was to establish the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and falls among aged retirees. Likewise, investigated musculoskeletal disorders, postural and gait characteristics among aged retired elderly. More so, the study also examines the relationship among gaits, postural and musculoskeletal disorders and falls. The study adopted descriptive survey design and made use of purposive sampling techniques to recruit Three hundred (300) retirees for the study. Fall Efficacy Scale (FES), Nomadic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), Functional Gait Assessment Scale (FGA), and Gait Ability and Postural Instability–Gait Difficulty (PIGD), were research instrument used in collecting data from the respondents. The result revealed that the prevalence majority having poor functional gait (63.7%) and abnormal posture (59.3%). The result also indicated that majority of the participants reported at least one MSD in the past year (86.3%) and past week (80.7%), while 44.3% and 33.3% of the participants had multiple MSD in the past year and week respectively. Low back pain was the most prevalent MSD in the past year (62.0%) and past week (57.7%). The result also indicated that there was significant association between each of marital status, living condition, years of retirement, level of education, and presence of hypertension and diabetes, and falls (p < 0.05). In addition, falls was negatively correlated with gait (r = -0.52; p < 0.001) and positively correlated with postural characteristics (r = 0.39; p < 0.001). The results showed that falls was associated with presence of MSD in the past year (χ2=31.196; p < 0.001), past week (χ2=28.886; p < 0.001) and presence of multiple MSD. Similarly, falls was significantly associated with gait (χ2=32.156; p < 0.001) and posture (χ2=70.102; p< 0.001). The study concluded that there was high prevalence of fall, musculoskeletal disorders, postural and gait abnormalities among aged retirees in Ife Central Local Government. There was significant association between musculoskeletal disorders, postural and gait characteristics and falls among the old retirees in the study area.

It also examined the extent of teachers’ involvement in practical activities at junior secondary school in the state, and described the participation of junior secondary schools’ students in Basic Science practical activities in the study area. The objectives were aimed to ascertain and providing empirical information on the availability of laboratory facilities for the teaching and learning of Basic Science in junior secondary schools and the involvement of students in practical activities in the state. The research design for the study was descriptive survey. The participants in the study were made up of junior secondary school Basic Science teachers and students in Osun State. The selected participants for the study comprised of 300 students and 15 teachers. Sampling of participants was done through multistage procedure. One Local Government Area (LGA) was chosen from each of the three senatorial districts through simple random sampling technique. Five government schools were chosen from respectively senatorial district using simple random sampling technique. Twenty students were chosen from JSS II and their teacher of Basic Science teachers with the use of simple random sampling technique. Three research apparatuses were deployed for the collection of required information and these are; Laboratory Apparatus Checklist for Basic Science (LACBS), Laboratory Apparatus Usage Questionnaire for Basic Science Teachers (LAUQBST), and Students’ Participation in Practical Activities Questionnaire (SPPAQ). Information gathered were presented using frequency counts and simple percentage. The result from the findings showed that laboratory apparatuses are not accessible for teaching of Basic Science in most schools in Osun States. It can be assumed from the average weighted outcomes of the table that laboratory facilities is low at 12.6% for teaching of Basic Science practical activities in JSS in Osun State. Also, the extent of teachers’ involvement inBasic Science practical activities is moderate at 80.0%. Furthermore, students’ involvement in Basic Science practical activities is low at 73.3% at JSS in Osun State. The study concluded that there is poor accessibility to laboratory facilities for the learning of Basic Science in most of the JSS in Osun State. Also, Basic Science teachers moderately engaged their students in practical exercises with the few available laboratory facilities and the participation of students’ in practical learning activities in the laboratory is extremely low.
