- ItemOpen AccessThe Metaphysics of Natural Kinds(Department of Philosophy, Obafemi Awolowo University, 2005) Fasiku GbengaThe study examined the arguments between essentialists and anti-essentialists, on the one hand, and realists and anti-realists, on the other, on the existence of natural kinds. It defended essentialist arguments justifying the existence of natural kinds. It also assessed some influential criticisms of essentialism, with a view to establishing their adequacy or otherwise. Furthermore, it explored how biological taxonomy could support essentialism and how this position opened up a debate in the Philosophy of Science about the reality of theoretical entities through which the existence of kinds in nature could be further established.

This was with view to determing the deep structure of the negation markers in Standard Yoruba and Awori dialects. It was found that the number of negators and their variants were more in Awori dialect than in standard Yoruba.

- ItemOpen AccessThe Nigeria press and armed robbery in south western Nigeria, 1960-1987.(Department of History, Faculty of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University., 2021) SIKIRU, Abiona YusuffThis study examined newspapers narratives of armed robbery incidents in southwestern Nigeria between 1960 and 1987. It is fact of history that newspapers played a crucial role in the nationalist agitations, decolonisation and Nigeria‟s independence. Nonetheless, newspapers involvements in everyday social, cultural and economic developments during and after colonial periods are also noticeable. Beginning from the 1950s, newspapers attention had shifted gradually, especially from colonial antagonism to focusing on challenges and prospect of self-governance. Personality and ethnic politics also dominated newspapers engagements at the time. On the other hand, social problems, particularly, crimes became permanent features of newspapers reportage and public engagement. This study therefore focused on armed robbery in southwestern Nigeria from the newspapers point of view. This study relied on primary and secondary data. Specifically, the primary data were predominantly newspapers – Daily Times, The Nigerian Tribune, The Guardian and The Punch. Headlines, editorials, opinions, and letters focusing on armed robbery incidents were carefully collected and analysed. The study adopted historical methodology and highlighted the transformation of armed robbery and government responses during the civil and military rules. The study also relied on extant literature such as books and journal articles to draw relevant information on armed robbery in southwestern Nigeria. The study found out that newspapers were crucial to the debate on armed robbery, law and criminal justice during the period under investigation. Aside the fact that newspapers provided day to day reports on armed robbery incidents, it was also a platform through which concerned individuals engaged the government on possible ways to abate armed robbery in the society. One instance was the proclamation on shoot at sight by Gen Yakubu Gowon in 1967. The study also revealed that armed robbery reports and debates were used as pretext bythe newspapers to challenge the military administrations at various times. For instance, while newspapers reports condemned Anini‟s atrocities in the old Bedel State, it also pushed the narratives of bad governance, especially under the administration of General Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida who approved the Structural Adjustment Programme against the will of the people. The study concluded that in spite of the institutionalization of penal code in the eradication of armed robbery in Nigeria, it remained endemic throughout the period covered. Factors such as corruption, unemployment and infrastructural decay which contributed to the rise of armed robbery remained unattended to and by 1987; armed robbery had become an institutionalized culture in Nigeria at large.

Obafemi Awolowo University., 2022) OGUNGBARO, Joseph Olubayo.This study traced the origin, vision, and mission of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Faith Home, Ede. It examined the administration, organization and contribution of CAC Faith Home, Ede to the missionary activities of Christ Apostolic Church in Nigeria. It also evaluated the relevance of Faith Home, Ede to the Missionary activities of Christ Apostolic Church in Nigeria. These were with a view to determining the contribution of Faith Home Ede to the Missionary activities of Christ Apostolic Church Nigeria. The study employed both primary and secondary sources of data. The primary source comprised oral interviews and questionnaire. The oral interviews were conducted with ten purposively selected persons. This consisted of missionary health workers of Christ Apostolic Church Faith Home, Ede, two matrons (past and present), two resident male doctors and two female nurses, two administrative staff and two labour room officers. Forty copies of questionnaire were administered in all; twenty to current students and fifteen to the outgone students and five to coordinators of the Faith Home. The Secondary source included books, journals articles and the Internet. The data collected were analyseed using socio-anthropological method. The results showed that the origin vision and mission of the Faith Home has been a point of manifestation of the miraculous within the CAC worldwide. The study revealed that the CAC Faith Home, through its administration and organization has contributed to the missionary activities of the Church by establishing the efficacy of its beliefs and practices regarding the power of prayers and faith healing. The study discovered that the Faith Home was relevant because it continued to enjoy increased patronage due the form of charity-based approach to its bills for health services. It also found that the CAC Faith Home adopted an open-door disposition to its operation by never discriminating on religion basis. It also discovered that the CAC Faith Home was dedicated mostly to delivery issues of women whose cases often been declared medically helpless. The study concluded that the CAC Faith Home has evolved over the years to become an integral part of the Church’s missionary platforms in Nigeria and beyond and the Faith Home contributed to the health services of the people of Ede by assisting people generally and specifically women who have medical issues to deliver successfully.
- ItemOpen AccessA critical analysis of thematic contents and stylistic features in oriki of towns in oke-ogun(Department of Linguistics and African languages, Faculty of arts, Obafemi Awolowo University., 2022) ADEMUYIWA Adewale LukmanThe study identified the issues of identity and cultural affinity of Òke Ògùn people of Oyo North Senatorial District in the oríkì of their towns. It also examined the concept of the oral formulaic and intertextuality in the oríkì of towns in Òkè-Ògùn. It further analysed the thematic contents and assessed the stylistic features in oríkì of Òkè-Ògùn towns. These were with a view to bringing to the fore, oral literary and stylistic qualities in the oríkì of Òkè-Ògùn towns. The study employed both primary and secondary sources of data. The primary source comprised a collection of Oríkì of forty towns in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State gathered from oral, written, audio and audio-visual materials. This was complemented with interviews conducted with 40 purposively selected chanters, drummers and historians, to get more details on Oríkì and historical background of towns in Oke-Ogun. The secondary source included books, journal articles, magazines and the Internet. The collected data were transcribed and analysed within the general theoretical framework of Archetypal theory and Genetic Structuralism. The study revealed that dialect, geographical locations, occupations, religions, beliefs, political structure and oríkì composition patterning are the archetypal elements of identity and cultural affinities of Òke-Ògùn people. The study further revealed names of towns, archetypal founders, archetypal situations, archetypal slangs, kinship terminologies and nominalization as xxiv the oral formulaic used in the formulation of oríkì of towns in Òke-Ògùn, while the insertion of other Yorùbá oral genres such as proverbs, incantation, Ifa literary corpus and songs are concepts of intertextuality in the oríkì of towns in Òke-Ògùn. Also, the study showed that the thematic contents in the oríkì of Òkè-Ògùn towns show common features of reference to their ancestors, origins, behaviours, taboo, foods, deities, manifestation of power, anthropological artefacts and the reference to geographical elements like mountain, rivers and forests. The study further revealed that foregrounded metaphor, simile, metonymy, hyperbole, personification, objectification, repetition, pun, tonal play, onomatopoeia and phonal-aesthetics are notable stylistic features embedded in the oríkì of towns in Òke-Ògùn for aesthetic purpose. The study concluded that the oríkì of towns in Òkè-Ògun showed that geographical locations are not the only indices that bind all these communities together; they also shared common archetypal attributes embedded in their oríkì. Also, oríkì is perceived as a repertory oral poetry through which archetypal elements are kept for incoming generations.
- ItemOpen AccessA Critical Assessment of the internalist theory of Epistemic justification(Department of philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University., 2022) Olusola Ayomide AsajuThe study identified and examined different versions of internalism as a theory of epistemic justification. It also examined the problems associated with the internalist theories of epistemic justification. Furthermore, it argued for the plausibility of the mentalist version of internalism as a theory of epistemic justification. This was done with a view to grounding the justification of knowledge claims mainly on internal factors without denying significance to external factors. The study employed both primary and secondary sources of data. The primary source included, Bonjour Laurence “Externalism and Internalism”, Ernest Sosa and Bonjour Laurence. Epistemic Justification: Internalism vs. Externalism, Foundations vs. Virtues, Alston Williams Internalism and Externalism in Epistemology, Fumerton Richard “What and what is Internalism?”, Ralph Wedgwood “Internalism Explained”, Alvin Goldman “Internalism Exposed”, Frederick F.S. Knowledge and Belief and Edmund Gettier’s “Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?”. The secondary source included books, journal articles and the Internet. The data collected were subjected to critical analysis and philosophical argumentation. The study found that epistemic internalism has various versions. It found that most versions of internalism are not plaussible because they do not account for the role of externality in epistemic justification. Furthermore, the study found that mentalism, as a viariant of internalism, acknowledges the significance of external factors in the justification of knowledge claims. Thus, the study concluded that the viability of the mentalist theories further supports the possibility of the internalist position on epistemic justification. It also found that not all versions of internalism absolutely reject the relevance of externality in epistemic justification.
- ItemOpen AccessInfluence of Teachers' Digital Literacy Skills on Osun State Public Secondary School Students' Academic Performance in a Computer-Based Test.(Department of Educational Technology and Library Studies, Faculty of Education. Obafemi Awolowo University, 2022) Ojo, Raphel AyodeleThe study determined the digital literacy skills possessed by the secondary school teachers. It investigated the influence of the teachers’ demographic variables (gender, academic qualification, level of exposure) on their digital literacy skills. The study also investigated the influence of teachers’ digital literacy skills on students’ academic performance in a computer-based test. This is with a view to determining the influence of teachers’ digital literacy skills on Osun State public secondary school students’ academic performance in a computer-based test. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted all senior secondary school teachers and students in Osun State public secondary schools. One hundred and eighty teachers and 450 students participated in the study. Multistage sampling procedure was employed in sample selection. Three Local Government Areas (LGAs) were selected from each senatorial districts of the state using simple random sampling technique. From each of the LGAs, two secondary schools with access to computer and that are willing to participate in the study was purposively selected. Ten teachers that showed willingness to participate in the study were selected from each of the schools using convenient sampling technique. All the students in a randomly selected arm of an SS II class in the selected schools were sampled. Consent form was administered on the teachers and the students before the administration of the instruments. Basic English Language and Mathematics Achievement Test (BELMAT) and Teachers’ Digital Literacy Scale (TDLS) were used for data gathering. BELMAT was a computer-based achievement test that gathered information on the students’ academic performance. TDLS was adapted from Jeong-Bae (2015). The face, content and construct validity of the instruments were determined. The reliability of the instruments was also determined. Analysis of data showed that the teachers’ skill in operation and application (mean = 18.87), problem solving and critical thinking (mean = 28.26) and digital citizenship (72.34). The teachers’ skills in inquiry and innovation is average (mean = 20.97). Results also showed that gender has no significant influence on the teachers operation and application skills (t(161) = 2.59; p > 0.05); problem solving and critical thinking skill (t161 = 2.55; p > 0.05); inquiry and innovation skill (t161 = 3.01) and digital citizenship skill (t161 = 2.86; p > 0.05). Teachers’ qualifications also had no significant influence on the operation and application skill (F(5,157) = 0.42; p > 0.05); problem solving and critical thinking skill (F(5,157) = 0.61; p >0.05); inquiry and innovation (F(5,157) = 0.76; p > 0.05 and digital citizenship (F(5,157) = 0.65; p > 0.05). Teachers’ level of exposure had significant influence on operation and applications (t159 = 5.58; p < 0.05); it also had significant influence on problem solving and critical thinking (t159 = 5.96; p < 0.05); teachers’ level of exposure also had significant influence on the inquiry and innovation skill (t159 = 4.87; p < 0.05). The level of exposure had significant influence on the digital citizenship skill of the teachers (t159 = 5.98; p < 0.05). Analysis of data also revealed that teachers’ digital literacy skills has no significant influence on the students’ academic performance in a computer-based test (R2 = 0.03) The study concluded that the digital literacy skills of the teachers are high and that teachers’ digital literacy skills have no significant influence on Osun state public students’ academic performance in a computer-based test.

It also examined arguments for and against euthanasia. The study also defended the idea of self ownership. This was done with a view to showing that the moral permissibility of euthanasia on the basis of self ownership provides a plausible ground for the legalization of euthanasia. This study adopted the method of philosophical argumentation, critical analysis and conceptual clarification of data collected from both primary and secondary sources. The Primary sources included works of philosophers such as: P.A Singer and M. Siegler Euthanasia: A Critique, Behnke, A. and Bok Sissels, (eds.) The Dilemma of Euthanasia, Jonathan G. Causing Death and Saving Life, Reisser, S. J Euthanasia, Joel Feinberg “Harm to self: The Moral Limit of Criminal Law”, Micheal Lacewing “Well-Being and Death” and D. Belgium “The right to die at the end of your life.” The secondary sources will include books, journal articles and the Internet. The data collected were subjected to critical analysis and philosophical argumentation. The study found that the concept of euthanasia has various meanings. It also found that the various arguments for and against euthanasia are inadequate because they did not pay adequate did not pay adequate attention to the concept of self ownership. Thus, the study found that the concept of self-ownership provides a plausible basis for the moral permissibility of euthanasia. The study concluded that the moral permissibility of euthanasia presents a justifiable ground for its legalization.

It also described the nature of the conflict between the agents of the state and non-state actors in the protests in the selected poems from the anthology. It further examined how the poets deploy language to underscore psychotherapy and existentialist issues in the selected poems. It finally interpreted the existentialist concerns that manifest in the poems. All these were done with a view to showing elements of psychotherapy and existentialism in Sọ̀rọ̀sókè: An #EndSARS Anthology, and how the poems show the disposition of the poets to the #EndSARS protests
- ItemOpen AccessVowel articulation patterns of preachers of children- and adult- directed English -medium sermons in selected pentecostal churches in Southwestern Nigeria(Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo Universityy, ile-ife., 2023) Oyelekan, Charlotte.Oyebimpe.This study described and identified the vowel articulation patterns in English-medium sermons of preachers of children and adult in Pentecostal churches in Southwestern Nigeria. It also described the influence of educational background on the vowel articulation patterns of preachers of children- and adult-directed English-medium sermons (CDS and ADS). It further analysed the acoustic features of vowel patterns articulated by preachers in children- and adult-directed English-medium sermons (CDS and ADS) and finally discussed the communicative implications of the identified vowel articulation patterns in the sermons. All these were done with a view to conducting a comparative study of vowel articulation patterns of preachers of children- and adult-directed English-medium Sermons in selected Pentecostal churches in Southwestern Nigeria. The data for this study was obtained from thirty-six (36) recorded sermons drawn from three (3) purposively selected Pentecostal churches from three (3) states: Ekiti, Lagos and Osun in Southwestern Nigeria. The three Pentecostal churches were: Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Living Faith Church (Winners’ Chapel) and Victory Life Ministry International (VLMI). Twelve (12) sermons each were recorded from the children and adult segments of each of the churches, making a total of thirty-six (36) in all the three states. All the thirty-six sermons were recorded with the aid of Video LAN (VLC) media player. The respondents’ outputs were then subjected to acoustic and perceptual analyses using PRAAT. Additionally, a questionnaire containing some structured items meant to elicit information on the respondents’ educational background was administered. The statistical package of social science (SPSS) was used to test the significance of the variable on the respondents’ vowel articulation patterns. The data were analysed drawing insights from Gile’s Communication Accommodation Theory and Larry Hyman’s Moraic Theory. The findings revealed that the vowel articulation patterns observed in the data showed three variant forms: the AP3 pattern, which represents the sophisticated Educated Nigerian; AP2, the educated Nigerian variant; and AP1, characterized by excessive modifications. Additionally, the study established that the social variable of educational background is significant to vowel articulation patterns. The P-value of 0.001 was less than 0.05 level of significance. Also, the findings from the acoustic analysis showed excessive vowel duration and pitch heights in children-directed sermons which resulted into affectation. However, this was not the case in adult- directed sermons (ADS). Finally, the communication implications showed that the Preachers of children- and adult-directed English-medium sermons demonstrated a clear case of convergence, where their sermon presentations were audience and goal- determined. The study concluded that the contextual variable of educational background plays significant role in religious discourse, especially in the aspect of vowel articulation and modification in sermon delivery. The study also concluded that Gile’s Communication Accommodation Theory and Larry Hyman’s Moraic Theory are adequate in accounting for the speech styles in sermons especially as it affects vowel articulation.
